Oak staircase with turned balustrade

The commission covered the staircase to the first floor and the mezzanine balustrade, well over ten metres of handrail in all, including sections bent to a curve.

Light oak staircase with a turned balustrade above a parquet floor

The handrail took the most work. On the curves we did not join it from short sections but bent it, so nothing shows at the turn and a hand runs along it without catching on any transition.

Spindles and posts were turned in our workshop, to a profile agreed with the client. Matt lacquer at the end, in the colour of natural oak.

Gallery

  • Staircase and floor came from the same batch of oak, hence the matching tone.

  • The posts were turned in our own workshop.

  • The mezzanine balustrade runs unbroken along its full length.

  • The handrail is bent rather than jointed at the turn, so no seams show.
